Are you doing your bit to reduce air pollution?

Fresh Start Waste Services are proudly backing the United Nations’ call to beat air pollution this World Environment Day.

The UK has committed to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by at least 80% by 2050 (compared with levels in the 1990s).

In line with our vision to lead the way in waste management, we are making conscious choices to reduce how much energy we consume.

This includes maintaining our HGV fleet of wagons that are, on average, four-and-a-half years old (we are aiming to be under four years by 2020.) Many are fitted with the latest green diesel engines.

All our vehicles have received the Government’s highest rating for roadworthiness following an inspection which includes tests related to emissions levels.

“Doing the right thing by the environment matters greatly to us at Fresh Start,” says our Chief Executive Officer Nicola McGrath. “We are proud to collect and recycle waste right across the North West in a legal and ethical way. We also recognise that we have a duty to minimise the impact of our fleet of trucks by reducing our emissions as far as we can.

‘We’ve taken several positive steps forward to do so and will shortly be announcing our participation in an exciting carbon capture scheme that completes the task. However, there is still more we can do with the support of our customers.”

To honour the legal obligations laid out in the UK’s 2008 Climate Change Act, Fresh Start will use some of the latest technology to assist with reducing road mileage.

“By driving less, we will be able to cut our emissions to levels as low as operationally possible,” explains our Head of Operations Mark Walker.

“We are working with our customers to find new ways to reduce the carbon footprint and do our bit for climate change. Air pollution seems complex, but we can all play a part in reducing it.”

World Environment Day takes place on Wednesday, 5 June. As a business, there are many ways to get involved – including:

• Segregation of waste to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill
• Making a pledge to use recyclable materials for your products
• Hosting a company tree planting day
• Using World Environment Day to ensure your power supply is renewable
• Considering low-emission or electric vehicles for the company fleet
• Investigating how you can reduce emissions of air pollutants from facilities and supply chains
