Fresh Start Waste Services is delighted to announce they are finalists in two categories at the North West Family Business Awards 2025: Business Services Excellence – Large Business and Leadership Excellence Award, where CEO Nicola McGrath has been nominated. This recognition underscores Fresh Start’s commitment to excellence in waste management and recycling services throughout the North West.
This year is particularly special as Fresh Start Waste Services celebrates its 20th anniversary. Established in 2005 by Paul Rogers Snr and his daughter, Nicola McGrath, the company has grown from a modest operation into a leading provider in the waste management industry. The company now boasts a fleet of over 50 vehicles and employs more than 120 staff members, reflecting its steady growth and dedication to environmental sustainability.
In recent years, Fresh Start has made significant strides in enhancing its services and infrastructure. The company invested in a state-of-the-art recycling facility, enabling the efficient processing of various materials such as glass, aluminium cans, tin cans, food, cardboard and other DMR. This initiative not only improved operational efficiency but also reinforced Fresh Start’s commitment to reducing landfill waste and promoting recycling.
Furthermore, Fresh Start has expanded its facilities to accommodate its growing workforce. The new premises provide ergonomic workstations, breakout areas, and meeting spaces, ensuring a comfortable and productive environment for staff. This investment reflects the company’s dedication to employee well-being and its proactive approach to accommodating business growth.
The company’s innovative “Simpler Recycling for Schools” campaign, launched in 2023, has been instrumental in preparing educational institutions for upcoming legislative changes in recycling regulations. This initiative has led to an average recycling rate increase of over 25% in participating schools, showcasing Fresh Start’s commitment to community engagement and environmental education.
Expressing her pride in the company’s achievements, CEO Nicola McGrath stated, “Being finalists for the North West Family Business Awards 2025 in two categories is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our entire team. As a family-run business, we have always prioritised sustainability, innovation, and community engagement. This recognition reinforces our commitment to these values and motivates us to continue striving for excellence in all aspects of our operations. On a personal level, I am of course thrilled to be nominated for the Leadership Excellence Award, and would like to congratulate all other fellow finalists.”
Co-Founder and Director of The Family Business Community, Sue Howorth, commented: “The quality of this year’s entries made the judges’ decisions extremely challenging. The finalists should be incredibly proud of their achievements. We’re looking forward to celebrating with all the family businesses in our region.”
Dave Clarkson, Co-Director, added: “We are thrilled by the level of commitment and attention to detail shown by all the applicants. The strength and diversity of the entries have truly impressed us.”
Sue Bagguley of Siemens in Manchester, who hosted the Judging Day, also shared her thoughts: “The calibre of applications has been outstanding, and it’s clear that family businesses in our region are both proud and forward-thinking. Many of the entries showcased innovation and a progressive mindset.”
Finalists will soon receive a visit from a specially selected panel of judges, who will assess the businesses before making their final decisions. The winners will be announced at a vibrant awards celebration on Friday 9th May 2025.
