Fresh Start Waste support food banks across the North West.

Family-run waste management company Fresh Start Waste are once again doing their bit to support those most in need within the North West through the provision of valuable food donations to food banks across the region.

Following an intensive solo 156.4 mile coast to coast bike ride, Commercial Director Colin Harvey raised £2188 which has now been put to good use at food banks across the North West, where Fresh Start provide waste collection, reuse and recycling services to businesses. Foodbanks supported with donations resulting from this included Salford, South Liverpool, Trafford South and Atherton and Leigh. All of whom are experiencing the same increase in demand for their support which is impounded by fuel and food cost increases and Universal Credit reductions.

South Liverpool foodbank co-ordinator Nicola Hawkes said “We are hugely grateful to Colin and Fresh Start Waste for their very generous donation to our foodbank. What a tremendous achievement to have completed such a strenuous solo ride in a single day! Last year we fed almost 11,000 people, including more than 4000 children. We are very worried about the cumulative effects of rises in food and fuel prices on household incomes, as well as the removal of the £20 uplift to Universal Credit and the on-going financial effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.

We’ve already seen people in work forced to come to us for the first time, including nurses, bus drivers and cleaners. We provide nutritionally balanced 3-day food parcels and basic toiletries; the donation from Fresh Start Waste will help us buy essential items that are under-represented in public donations, such as long-life milk and tinned fruit.”

Trafford South Foodbank commented “Thank you to all at Fresh Start Waste and especially Colin Harvey for his 156.4-mile coast to coast solo bike ride for the donation to the Trafford South Foodbank of £225 and the fantastic total of £2,188 for Trussell Trust Foodbanks. Your donation will help us to continue our efforts to provide food to people in need in our local community and support the Trussell Trust in their nationwide efforts working to stop UK hunger and poverty.”

Warren Done, Project manager at Atherton and Leigh Foodbank added “Thank you so much for your donation and support to the Atherton and Leigh Foodbank it really is very kind and much appreciated.”

Colin Harvey, Commercial Director at Fresh Start Waste said “Food banks we have supported have benefited from over £2000 worth of vital food supplies, which are sadly more in need than ever given the current fuel and food bill rises and Universal Credit £20 per week reduction. The coast to coast bike ride I completed recently was gruelling, but knowing the money I was going to raise to help people living in food poverty spurred me on to complete.

“As we are a family organisation, committed to minimising food waste amongst other initiatives it was an obvious fit to help feed those most in need in the communities in which we operate. It’s a great feeling to know that through the kind support of the people who sponsored me, families are now able to put food on the table.”
